The Northland Field Days Dargaville

Where Rural Heart Meets Community Spirit

Each year in late February, the rural town of Dargaville, Northland, New Zealand comes alive with one of the region’s most beloved events, The Northland Field Days. For decades, locals and visitors from across the country have gathered at the sprawling showgrounds on Awakino Point East Road to celebrate agriculture, innovation, community and pure Kiwi ingenuity.

A Brief History, From Humble Beginnings to Regional Institution

The Field Days began way back in 1985 at the Dargaville racecourse, organised by the local Dargaville Jaycees as a simple agricultural showcase. Even pouring rain couldn’t dampen spirits, with around 80 exhibitors attending the first event, it was an unexpected success that sparked an enduring tradition.

By 1986, permanent power had been installed for exhibitors, and through the 1990s attendance continued to grow. The event quickly expanded beyond its Jaycees roots to become Northland’s premier agricultural gathering and one of the largest of its kind in New Zealand.

A pivotal moment arrived in 2006, when the Field Days committee purchased 33 hectares at the corner of SH14 and Awakino Point East Road the permanent home where the event still takes place today. Over the years, countless upgrades have been made from sealed access roads to improved facilities, all while keeping that authentic “field days” atmosphere.

Today, it’s run by a dedicated group of volunteers and a small staff, with profits reinvested into community initiatives such as scholarships, research grants, and support for non-profit organisations.

Security At The Northland Field Days Dargaville

Professional 24-hour Security Patrols, The organisers employ professional security guards who patrol the entire event site continuously from 4:00 pm on the Sunday before the event starts, until 9:00 am the Monday after it finishes. This means there is around-the-clock security coverage during and between event days. After working as a security guard at the Dargaville Field Days for many years, first for Gary and then for Keith I was finally able to return this year with my daughter Amy, Instead of working, we walked around together and enjoyed a truly wonderful day.
